Construction of Nove Fužine: A Conversation with Architect Vladimir Brezar

As part of the Housing.Yu project, a public conversation with architect Vladimir Brezar will be held at the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana on Thursday, 16 October 2025, at 5:00 p.m. The conversation will be moderated by art historian and curator Martina Malešič.

Fužine is one of the last comprehensively planned residential neighbourhoods built during the socialist period. Compared with other neighbourhoods, Fužine feature a large amount of public space, including a cultural centre, educational institutions, sports facilities, and recreational areas. The first of four construction phases began in 1977 and was completed in 1988. Dr Vladimir Brezar was one of the architects involved in designing the neighbourhood. His research, professional, and teaching work is focused on residential construction.

The conversation is the first in a series of interviews with contemporaries organized as part of the Housing.Yu project – The Right to Housing: The Production of Everyday Living Spaces in Yugoslavia (1945–1991). The project is carried out within the Horizon Europe programme, with the support of the European Research Council (ERC, CoG), at the Institute of Art History in Zagreb. The project partners are the Museum of Architecture and Design, the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Ljubljana, and the Centre for Cultural and Historical Research of Socialisma at Juraj Dobrila University of Pula.
